About the studio

for the things you
cannot buy

uglydog:modelworks is a small workshop in Wigan. We make one-off parts, personal pieces and prototypes for people who need something more specific than a factory can sell them.

Some jobs do not fit in a catalogue.

A drawer handle snapped and the part stopped being made in 2009. A gift that has to be for one specific person and nobody else. An idea you want to hold in your hand before you commit to making forty of them.

Those are the jobs this workshop exists for. Not mass production, and not the kind of engineering that needs a certificate — the useful middle, where somebody needs one good thing made properly and cannot find anyone to do it.

We keep the workshop small on purpose and stay close to every job. That is why the prices are published and why we will tell you when a job is not one for us.

What it is like to work with us.

Three things we will not trade away for a faster job.

  1. 01

We start with the job, not the machine

What does the piece have to do, or what does it have to feel like? The material and the process follow from that answer, not the other way round.

  2. 02

You get a straight answer before you spend anything

The price, the likely date and any trade-offs come first. If there is a cheaper or better route — including one that is not us — we will say so.

  3. 03

It is made here, and checked by a person

Every piece is made to order in the workshop and inspected before it goes out. Nothing is drop-shipped and nothing is passed to a third party.
