The model : the pieces
Left is the actual model, split into printable sections and laid out for strength. Right is what came off the printers and out of the finishing bench.
The result
Not a chess set. A pair of room-sized characters.
The brief was to take two instantly recognisable forms and give them enough height and weight to hold their own in a room.
It is exactly the sort of object that makes sense to produce to order: familiar, but in a size and finish no shop would keep on a shelf.
The approach
Classic proportions, a restrained finish.
We kept the turned profiles simple so they still read clearly from across the room. The deep matte black is deliberately quiet — it sits alongside furniture rather than competing with it.
Each piece is split into printable sections, arranged for strength, then joined and finished by hand: felt base, body, screw joint, crown.
What happened next
Made once, and worth making again.
The pair began as a one-off, and it is the kind of piece we are happy to make again — every set is modelled to the size you want and finished by hand, so no two commissions have to match.
